Eduard Abashia, a lecturer at the Department of Psychology at the Dnipro Institute of PJSC "IAPM", a lawyer, psychologist at the Amur-Nizhnodniprovskyi District Department of the State Institution "Probation Center" branch in Dnipropetrovsk region, and a member of the International Association of Psychologists and Consultants on Sexual Education, informs about the following. The idea of International Youth Day was proposed in 1991 by young people gathered in Vienna, Austria, for the first session of the World Youth Forum of the United Nations System. The forum recommended proclaiming an International Youth Day, especially for fundraising and promotional purposes, to support the United Nations Youth Fund in partnership with youth organizations.
In 1998, a resolution proclaiming August 12 as International Youth Day was adopted at the first session of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, hosted by the Government of Portugal in cooperation with the United Nations (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998). This recommendation was subsequently endorsed by the fifty-fourth session of the General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/54/120 entitled "Policies and programmes involving youth" (17 December 1999).
The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organized to support the Day in order to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth, adopted by the General Assembly in 1996.
Security Council Resolution 2250 (9 December 2015) "Youth, Peace and Security" is an unprecedented recognition of the urgent need to engage young peacebuilders in promoting peace and countering extremism, and clearly positions youth as important partners in global efforts.
International Youth Day is celebrated annually on August 12 to highlight the significant contributions of young people and the challenges they face around the world. This day was established by the United Nations in 1999 to raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities facing young people worldwide, as well as to promote their role in shaping a better future.
