A lecturer from the Department of Psychology at the Dnipro Institute, Private Joint Stock Company of Higher Educational Institution "MAUP," a legal expert, psychologist of the Amur-Nyzhnodniprovsk District Department of the State Institution "Probation Center" in the Dnipropetrovsk Region, and member of the International Association of Psychologists and Consultants on Sexual Education, Eduard Abashia, informs the following. United Nations Day, which is celebrated annually on October 24, was proclaimed in October 1947 by a resolution of the UN General Assembly (No. 168) and was dedicated to the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.
In 1971, the General Assembly, in its resolution (No. 2782), which emphasized that United Nations Day should become an international holiday, recommended that member states celebrate it as a public holiday.
The United Nations (UN) is an international organization of states created with the purpose of:
- maintaining and strengthening peace and security on the planet;
- developing friendly relations and cooperation between countries;
- joint efforts to improve living conditions for poor people, combat hunger and disease, eliminate illiteracy, and promote respect for rights and freedoms, among other objectives.
One of the first UN documents was the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in December 1948.
Currently, the UN includes 193 member states, each of which is also a member of the UN General Assembly. The main bodies of the UN are: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat. The UN also has several specialized agencies - international intergovernmental organizations dealing with economic, social, and humanitarian issues (UNESCO, WHO, FAO, ILO, WTO, IAEA, and others).
The official languages of the UN and its organizations are English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and French. The UN headquarters is located in New York (USA).
