A lecturer at the Department of Psychology of the Dnipro Institute of the Private Higher Educational Institution "MAUP," a legal expert, and a psychologist of the Amur-Nyzhnodniprovskyi District Department of the State Institution "Probation Center" in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Eduard Abashia, provides the following information. Today, February 5, 2025, marks the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Law of Ukraine "On Probation." On this day, probation officers in Ukraine celebrate their professional holiday.

Probation is a set of measures that includes a wide range of social, psychological, and legal actions applied by the relevant authorized state body, aimed at creating conditions for the rehabilitation of the probation subject (client) and their adaptation to life in society, as well as preventing them from committing repeated offenses.

The law introduces probation as an alternative to imprisonment, as a means of punishment for all crimes specified in the Special Part of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Any system must be based on certain principles. It would be worth mentioning the South African ethical doctrine and the principle of Ubuntu: "A person is a person through another person. My humanity is intertwined with yours; to dehumanize you is to dehumanize myself." The work of probation officers should be built on such principles.

Probation is operational and is an extremely important system that requires further transformation, taking into account the best global practices and philosophical concepts and teachings, - stated the probation department psychologist.
