On June 11, 2026, Eduard Abashiia, a clinical psychologist at the Mental Health Center of the KNP "City Clinical Hospital No. 6" of the Dnipro City Council and a lecturer at the Department of Psychology of the Dnipro Institute of PrAT HEI "IAPM", held an appointment and provided counseling to a patient who approached the healthcare facility with a psychological request. The psychological counseling was conducted using a person-centered approach. The person-centered approach (English: person-centered approach) is a system of psychotherapeutic and counseling work with a individual developed by the American psychologist Carl Rogers, one of the founders of humanistic psychology. Carl Rogers believed that every person deserves attention, respect, and acceptance. These principles of Rogers became the foundation of his therapy and his "person-centered approach" as a whole.
The main principles of the person-centered approach are:
- the inner nature (or essence) of a human being is positive, constructive, and social;
- this nature begins to manifest and reveal itself in a person whenever there is an atmosphere of unconditional positive regard, empathetic understanding, and congruent self-expression in their relationships with another person (or other people).
The main task of the counselor is to create an appropriate atmosphere of communication, namely:
- to accept the patient without any preconditions, exactly as he or she is, with their values, beliefs, needs, and priorities;
- to listen to the patient without judging, but with empathy;
- to be open and communicate sincerely during the conversation with the patient, without hiding behind the mask of a psychologist.
Only such communication is therapeutic. It is what actualizes, stimulates, reinforces, and facilitates the positive nature (inner potential) of a human being, resulting in the actual psychotherapeutic effect — mental healing and recovery, personal development, and positive changes in life.
